99 Good Reasons to Read a Blog

The subhead here could be Great stuff on blogs! There’s a compilation on a blog, b5media, of great blogs recently posted on the “best” worst practices in businesses  those that will kill your business. They call it 99 Ways to Kill Your Business, and I picked up a link to it from Rachel Clarke’s Behind the Buzz blog.

My point? Lots of people still have the idea that blogs are diaries. I don’t remember how many times people have said just that to me, as in: Why would I read a blog? I don’t care what some so-and-so had for breakfast.

So here, next time the question comes up: 99 good reasons to read a blog.

  1. This brings up a question I’ve been wondering about for some time. What do you do if your business is … schizophrenic? I have two very different parts ot my business. One is businesslike (writing and editing for clients), but the other is personal (writing fiction and personal essays). There doesn’t seem to be a middle ground for a blog here because the goals are so very different (garnering business for one, selling myself as a creative individual for the other). Do I need two blogs?

  2. Hey there, Cindie. Yes, I do think you need two blogs. You have two different audiences. Two different goals for the blogs… So, you are right on, in my humble, to consider two blogs; or focus on the one you feel passionate about because that’s the one you’ll be able to sustain. Here’s a link to thoughts on longterm blogging.

  3. Do you think the two blogs should link or share a commonality in naming? Or should I keep them as separate as possible?

  4. There’s a good marketing question! My first thought would be to keep them separate. Just as you would not do a direct mail piece with business on one side of the page and fiction on the other, the blogs should not be coupled. Different customers, different forum. That said, you might want a discreet list of your blogs and your website on each of your formats. Just for open communication and transparency… always appreciated in blogosphere.

  5. Thanks for the great advice!
